BriteLyt, Inc. has researched, tested, designed, & developed this lantern, as larger companies were unable to provide a working model, using Methanol/Ethanol/Alcohol.

TESTING: See Photos below.

"I met day before yesterday with the developer of the BriteLyt ethanol(all alcohol)lantern..

This is a lantern that has been developed specifically for and as a result of this project by adapting the well-known  BriteLyt lantern to burn alcohols rather than hydrocarbon fuels.

It was always assumed that a pressure lantern would not work with alcohol, and would not provide satisfactory light. As a result of our work, particularly that of the lantern expert, Eddie Draper, we made some surprising discoveries. This lantern has a number of distinct advantages over the kerosene lantern.

Some of them are:

1. The lantern burns very cleanly; it does not soot up.  As a result, it is much easier to maintain.  It needs virtually no maintenance.

2. The lantern is "self-pressurizing," meaning that it creates its own pressure (about 1/2 atmosphere) by heating the fuel and causing it to expand and volatilize into a gas.  It reaches the mantle as a gas, not as anatomized liquid (as in a kerosene lamp).  When you see the lantern, you will note that it has been designed to heat the alcohol in the fuel line that feeds the alcohol to the mantle.

Normally you have to keep a kerosene lamp well pumped up, to about 3 atmospheres (36 lbs/sq inch) because you are forcing kerosene as a liquid through the fuel line and into the nozzle, which atomizes the liquid and sprays it onto the mantle where it burns.

The ethanol/methanol lantern functions perfectly at 1 atmosphere of pressure and indeed at less.  It takes little or no pumping after the initial ignition phase, virtually running itself.  Again (and as in the stove), the alcohol is burning as a gas not as a liquid.

 3. Because of the above, the alcohol lantern burns without the constant attention of the operator.  Thus it is very convenient.

 4. The nozzle that feeds the gas to the mantle is not small, but is larger. This, and the fact that alcohol will not soot, prevents the lantern's fuel-feeding system from getting clogged.  Unlike a kerosene lantern, the alcohol lantern does not have to be taken apart and cleaned.

5. The alcohol gives a brighter light than kerosene and, surprisingly, the methanol a brighter light yet than the ethanol.

 6. The ignition of the alcohol lantern is quicker and easier than that of the kerosene lantern.

 7. Alcohol reflects less heat than kerosene, thus the lantern does not throw off as much heat and much less heat radiates sideways.  The mantle stays more robust in the alcohol lantern than the kerosene lantern, thus breaking less and requiring less frequent replacement.  If the mantle breaks during operation, it will not spray alcohol out like kerosene to the glass and cause the glass to break.  The alcohol lantern will continue to operate with a broken mantle, and without the danger of breaking the glass.

 8. The alcohol lantern is more energy efficient.

 9. The alcohol lantern is safer, presenting less of a fire risk.  With a higher latent heat of evaporation, the alcohol stays cool in the fuel canister as it evaporates, thus cooling the alcohol and keeping it cool.

10. There are no odors or toxic emissions with the alcohol lantern. As a result of our work, we have discovered that alcohol is a far superior fuel for lighting than kerosene.  The advantages are quite striking and are "across the board.".  I think you will be surprised and pleased with them.

By the way, Mr. Draper has also developed a "multi-fuel" lantern that will operate on anything from alcohol fuels to kerosene fuel to gasoline or diesel.

But since we will have ethanol, it makes more sense to use it, and to enjoy its many advantages. The lantern throws off a tremendous amount of light and would provide the opportunity to not have to run a generator at night just for lighting.

All of one's lighting in an office or compound could be provided for by one or more lanterns, which would consume only a small amount of fuel compared to the diesel required to run the generator."

The methanol lantern should produce almost no Carbon Monoxide (CO).  The CO is a product of incomplete combustion when not enough air is getting to the flame. In the case of the methanol lantern, as long as the fuel-to-air mixture is right, the fuel should all burn to water and CO2, with only very small amounts of CO.

The lantern will not produce formaldehyde.  Some small amount of aldehydes may be produced, but these will be less than 10 parts per million (ppm),probably more like 1 ppm.

While formaldehyde can be produced from methanol, the combustion occurring in the lantern will not create the necessary conditions to produce formaldehyde. The combustion achieved by the lantern is clean.
